Types of products in WooCommerce

When adding a product to a WooCommerce store, we have different types to choose from. These can be simple products, grouped products, external (affiliate) products, as well as products with variants. In addition, the product can be virtual or / and downloadable. Below we present the differences between the individual product types.

Simple product

A simple product is a product that does not have different variants for the buyer to choose from. In other words, there is no division here, e.g. by size, color or material. A simple product can be physical or virtual, as well as downloadable. This is the basic type of product in WooCommerce.

Grouped product

A WooCommerce grouped product is used to create product packages. Thanks to it, we can offer the customer one package (set) of several different products:

A grouped product does not have its own individual price. The price is the sum of the prices of all the products that make up the set. In addition, the customer sees the grouped product as one item, but after clicking on it, they can see a list of all the products that make it up.

External / affiliate product

An external product in WooCommerce is one that is not actually sold directly by our store. Instead, we direct customers to an external page where they can make a purchase. This allows, for example, adding a product with an affiliate link. In the case of an external product, we do not have to think about stock levels or finalizing the transaction in our cart. Everything happens on the external page to which we direct.

Variable product

This is a product that has several or even a dozen variants – e.g. clothing in different sizes. Each variant is defined by a set of attributes, thanks to which we can determine what the variants should be. Examples of attributes may be: size, color, type of material, type of product, scope of service, etc. It is worth noting that individual variants may differ from each other in terms of photo or price.

Well-chosen variants save time – instead of creating separate products for each type, we manage all of them in one place. This is also a convenient solution from the customer’s perspective.

The variety of product types in WooCommerce allows us to make sales options more flexible and adapt them to our own preferences. This is undoubtedly behind the success of the plugin, which gains many new supporters year after year.
