Access to email can be obtained in two ways. One way is by using an email client (e.g., Thunderbird, Outlook). The other way is to use Webmail, which is an email client accessed through a web browser.
On our hosting service, the default Webmail client is RoundCube. With it, you can receive, send, and manage your mailbox and emails. To access it, you simply add /webmail to your domain’s address, e.g., clientdomain.com/webmail.
You might also come across websites like roundcube.com. Is it safe to use them? How do they differ from the /webmail address?
RoundCube is a web-based email client that operates using the IMAP protocol. This protocol fetches and synchronizes messages from the mail server. When you log in using the /webmail address, you directly access the RoundCube application hosted on your server. This is the safest option, as emails are fetched locally and not processed by third parties.
When logging in through a site like roundcube.com, you are transmitting your login credentials to an external server owned by an unknown company. This is not a secure practice—you don’t know how your data is being processed. In cases where personal data is included in the correspondence, using such a site could potentially violate GDPR regulations.
