Product short description in WooCommerce

A product short description in WooCommerce is one of the most important elements for a potential customer of our store. We present the most important information about the product in it. In most locations, the short description is displayed directly under the product title, next to the price and a featured image. It is this description that is supposed to keep the customer longer and encourage them to read the product details. In addition, it is worth remembering that a well-written short description can positively affect the positioning of the store in search engines.

What should a product short description in WooCommerce contain?

Here is the most important information that a short description should contain:

  • the most important features of the product that distinguish it and are intended to encourage purchase (let’s describe the product using the language of benefits),
  • a concise description of the most important elements (a short description, as the name suggests, is not used to describe our product in detail),
  • phrases that can act as keywords (however, let’s not use descriptions composed of only keywords, because it sounds artificial and will certainly not encourage purchase).

Where to add a short description

To add a short description, we need to create or edit an existing product in WooCommerce. Then we will see the classic text editor that we know from the first versions of WordPress. It contains basic functions, such as text italicization, bolding or listing. It is worth remembering that the description should be legible to the customer, so there is no point in adding too many distinguishing features.

Two locations for product descriptions in WooCommerce

When editing a product in WooCommerce, you will definitely notice that there are two places to enter text: the product description and the product short description. The first one is used to add all other information that, although important, is not so important to include in the short description. Remember also that attributes are used to include parameters such as dimensions, weight, etc. There is no point in including these elements in the product description itself, unless you want to additionally highlight them or add some other important information to the others.
