Attributes in WooCommerce are product features or properties that allow for a more detailed description of the offered products. Each product can have its own attributes, which can (but don’t have to) be used to create variations. Attributes can also be created globally. This makes it easier to present your store’s assortment to customers and encourage them to make a purchase, while also enhancing product filtering to help customers find exactly what they are looking for.
Examples of Attributes in WooCommerce
The types of attributes depend on what needs to be described to increase sales potential. Here are some example attributes along with their values:
- Size (e.g., XS, S, M, L, XL for clothing, but also dimensions for various materials, such as 120 cm x 60 cm)
- Capacity (e.g., 100 ml, 150 ml for food products or storage items like bottles)
- Color (e.g., black, white, red)
- Material (e.g., cotton, polyester, stainless steel)
- Brand (e.g., Nike, Adidas)
Adding Attributes in WooCommerce
Global attributes can be added in the Attributes tab under the Products section in the WordPress admin menu. There, you can create new attributes, select their type (e.g., dropdown, checkbox), enable product archives, and define possible values.
Product-specific attributes are added directly in the product editing screen, within the Attributes section.
Displaying Attributes
If the theme has not been customized, attributes will be displayed on the single product page under Additional Information. The attribute type name (e.g., size) and all possible values will be visible to customers.
Attributes are not the same as product tags or categories. Their purpose is different—they do not organize or categorize the product assortment. Instead, they provide additional information that doesn’t need to be included directly in the product description. Attributes are simply a key element in building an eCommerce store that is both functional for sellers and user-friendly for customers.
