Variable product in WordPress

A variable product in WordPress is one that comes in different versions, such as differing by color, size, material, or capacity. We decide which variations the product can have.

Example of variable product – choosing a poster size:

How to create a variable product in WordPress?

  1. Add a new product in the WordPress admin panel.
  2. Select the product type: instead of the default “Simple Product,” it must be “Variable Product.”
  3. Add attributes that will differentiate the types of our product, e.g., color, size, shape, etc.
  4. Go to the “Variations” section and, based on the selected attributes, create all possible combinations of variations.
  5. For each variation, set the price, stock status, image, and other important details.
  6. You can now publish your product.

Why is it worth using variations?

First and foremost, variations allow us to present the offer in a clear and organized way. Instead of having several or even dozens of products that differ, for example, by color or size, we can create a single product and add variations to it. It also makes managing easier – updating prices, descriptions, or images happens within a single product.

Adding variations to the store also satisfies the needs of a larger number of customers. We give them a choice, and that’s something the vast majority of users appreciate.

When should you use variable product?

Variable products are ideal for a wide range of assortments. They are commonly used in clothing stores to display different sizes, colors, or materials. In electronics stores, they can highlight different versions, colors, or more specific attributes like capacity, voltage, etc. In grocery stores, they can differentiate flavors or packaging sizes. The applications are truly numerous.

They are also useful not only for stores selling physical products. In service businesses, we can distinguish available packages, service locations, or duration.
