Product tags in WooCommerce

Product tags in WooCommerce organize our products and help store customers find what they are looking for. They complement the role of categories in this. Here is the most important information you should know to properly tag your products.

  • Tags are not keywords,
  • they connect products from different categories with a common denominator,
  • they are not hierarchical, unlike categories,
  • We can edit and add them directly in the product edition or in the Products -> Tags section, which can be found in the Dashboard of our WordPress.

Where to add tags in WooCommerce?

In the Products section in the Dashboard menu, there is a separate tab dedicated to tags. We can create tags in it, edit them (including a simplified name, although this is not recommended) and add a description to them.

Tags do not have a featured image, unlike categories. The layout is quite similar to category management, with the difference that for obvious reasons we will not have parent and child tags here. The number in the last column will show us how many products a given tag has been assigned to – for it to fulfill its role, there should be at least two.

Removing a tag does not affect the removal of a product or the behavior of a category. It is worth tagging products when we already have at least a few of them, so that the tags fulfill their role.

How it works

To understand the meaning of tagging, it is best to imagine an online electronics store. There are various devices in it, divided into categories, e.g. cameras, phones, etc. For example, selecting the wireless tag by the user will show all wireless devices, regardless of the category to which they are assigned. Therefore, appropriately selected tags are a valuable navigation network for the customer.

Taxonomies in WooCommerce are not complicated and we can easily assign products to parent and child categories and tag them. It is worth doing it in a way that will best serve the potential customer and, if necessary, modify the taxonomy as the assortment changes or expands.
